Description
3 Volumes. J.J. Foster, French Art from Watteau to Prud'hon. First Edition. Bound by Zahnsdorf in full red morocco with an elaborate geometrical bordering gilt-tooled design on the front and rear boards. The spines display raised bands, dotted in gilt tooling with panels displaying geometrical designs, bordering, and label lettering, all gilt-tooled. The top edges are gilt with intricately gilt-tooled borders and silk endpapers. This edition is stamped by Zahnsdorf on the front lower turn-in. This copy additionally carries, at the rear turn-in, the gilt stamp of a binder at his bench reserved for the Zahnsdorf exhibition and special bindings. Copy belonging to Alexandra Federovna, Tsarina of Russia, with her bookplate in volumes II and III. It is likely that this was bound especially by Zahnsdorf for her, as each volume has a morocco ex-libris bearing the 'faux' cipher of the 18th century Tsarina Elizabeth I of Russia, with her initials and a crown modeled after the British crown. This Royal Edition is limited to 35 copies printed on vellum and illustrated with 45 hand-colored plates, 35 of which are printed only for this edition, this being no. 3. Published by Dickinsons in London, 1905. A very handsome set.
