Description
A pair of cast iron jardenière, “faunurna” designed by Ivan Johnsson (Sweden 1885-1970) and produced by Näfveqvarn foundry. Cast with classical motifs and figures. Wonderful patina. diam. base 10in. Näfveqvarn foundry is one of the oldest foundries in Sweden dating back to the early 1600s. The holes in the bottom are correct and are either part of the construction or designed for drainage.
Provenance - These urns have been outside a Villa house in Danderyd, Stockholm, Sweden since the 1930s. They are therefore one of the earlier castings of this model.
Ivar Johnsson (1885–1970) was one of Sweden's most influential sculptors. His work was found in several public places in the country. In the port of Gothenburg, the harbor entrance is adorned with the sculpture Woman by the Sea. In the same city, Johnsson also designed decorations for Karl Johansskolan. The school was designed by architect Gunnar Asplund. The sculptor and architect also collaborated on the construction of Stockholm City Library, whose entrance is adorned with reliefs designed by Ivar Johnsson. At the World's Fair in Paris in 1925, Johnsson received a Grand Prix medal for the bronze sculpture David. For Näfveqvarn's Foundry, the sculptor designed a number of objects, including urns and a letterpress. -
