19th Century Native American Bandolier Beaded Bag, Great Lakes, Circa 1890

Sold Sold
  • Description
This is a beautifully hand crafted Native American bandolier beaded bag from the Great Lakes region, Circa 1890. The heavily beaded bag with bright floral decoration is typical of the lake region, and was constructed by women utilizing thousands of small glass seed beads mounted on trade cloth, typically cotton, as this one. They were made from 1865 through the 1940.

In the 19th century the bandolier bag was sometimes traded with the Plains tribes in exchange for horses.

They were designed to be worn by men for dances and ceremonies and represented prestige. Later bags had a pouch with a slit at the top and a beaded strap to be worn diagonally over the shoulder, while earlier bags were sewn shut and were used simply for decoration sans the strap. This bag is an earlier one with brightly colored intricate floral bead work in outstanding original condition.
