Description
In spite of living in a very harsh environment, the Aleutian Indians wove incredibly fine baskets. In fact, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, their baskets were described as being "as fine as linen". They were highly sought after.
One needs to remember the extremely harsh environment and living conditions in the Aleutian Islands. Women harvested the rye grass during the brief warm weeks and set it aside to dry. The weaver twined the basket during the cold season. There is a curve woven into the form so that it molds into a circle easily. Presumably an older weaver wove this basket, given its quality.
Hatbands are exceedingly rare. Men and women wore hats at that time. It appears that this hatband was never used but was instead carefully stored and passed down through the generations.
The display stand is included with the hatband. -
