Description
A pair of early Victorian 18 inch globes by Smith& Son, each set into a turned mahogany stand on three cabriole legs centred on compass roses, the terrestrial globe stating ‘Smith’s Terrestrial Globe containing the whole of the Latest Discoveries and Geographical Improvements also the tracks of the most celebrated Circumnavigators, London C. Smith & Son, 172 Strand, 1858’, the celestial globe undated, compasses replaced. English, c1840.
Footnote: The Smith family of London globe makers, founded in 1799, produced a variety of floor and table models of globes throughout the 19th century. Charles Smith was joined in business by his son in 1845. -
