Description
Austrian Art Nouveau Jugendstil gilt metal mounted green glass vase
Austrian, c. 1910
Height 36cm, diameter 14cm
Dating to the early 20th century, this refined Austrian vase is a striking example of the Jugendstil movement - Austria’s distinct response to the sweeping Art Nouveau style that captivated Europe at the time. While the movement originated in France, its organic, nature-inspired forms quickly spread across the continent, with each country embracing its own interpretation.
Austria’s version, known as Jugendstil, favoured elegant silhouettes and flowing decorative elements - both beautifully embodied in this piece. The vase features a slender green glass body, gracefully accented with finely cast gilt metal mounts. The front of the vase is richly embellished with intricate, pierced metalwork arranged in flowing patterns. The back, in contrast, is left simple.
Adding further visual appeal are a series of luminous opalescent stones set into the metalwork. Varying in size, these decorative gems catch and reflect the light, creating a captivating shimmer that enhances the overall composition.
Blending Austrian craftsmanship with early modern design sensibilities, this stylish vase is a superb acquisition for collectors of Jugendstil objects or fine European art glass. -
