Chinese Scholar Lingbi Stone on Display Stand

Sold Sold
  • Description
A visually stunning vertical and porous scholar stone of Lingbi type displayed on a fitted wood base. The rock formation features an elegant vertical cloud form with numerous porous and open grottos, qualifying the type as the Linglong Lingbi, a type of Lingbi such interlinking windows in a more jagged and lighter version that allow the viewer to see through the stone, thus evoking a poetic feeling. The greyish black stone is beautifully contrasted with white striations. The top heavy stone is balanced perfectly in its presentation, mimicking an prototype image of a precarious mountain in a Chinese landscape, like the peaks found in Zhangjiajie. The wrinkled surface with furrows and folds adds more drama to its exotic appearance. The stone has a beautiful ringing tone when knocked, a character of Lingbi stones.
The naturally weathered stone from Lingbi, Anhui Province were collected and priced by Chinese scholars since Tang dynasty. They were displayed in the scholar's study on complimentary custom wood stand serving as a focal point for meditation on nature and philosophy. The novelty of the shape and unusual cavities that were weathered naturally through ages were highly appreciated as an inspiration for containing nature in imagination.
Provenance: purportedly Purchased from Noted Collector, Author and Scholars' Rocks Expert Kemin Hu.
