There is no mistaking a piece of Kodai san's work. This ascending star of Japanese contemporary ceramics graduated from Tohoku University in 2013 and swiftly followed that with a postgraduate research Masters degree. Since 2015 he has been the subject of no less than 6 solo exhibitions across Japan and been in several mixed exhibitions.
Based from his studio in Miyagi prefecture, his work is a wonderfully free, expressionistic celebration of the forward direction for Japanese ceramic art. Traditional forms are given new contemplation with a form of respectful subversion - vessels for tea and sake confuse and intrigue with the fascinating manifestation of working his materials. Sculptural forms amaze with their surface and construction qualities, commanding the eye to examine every colour filled fissure. Forms barely whole are made good with glaze and colour. The fragility of ceramics laid bare but made robust with design and true artistic talent. -
