Description
This powerful bronze -- depicting a nude fisherman hauling in his net -- is a superb example of Art Deco sculpture influenced by Auguste Rodin's emphasis on the emotion and physicality of the human figure. Here, the strength and muscularity of the male figure is shown to great effect, its power belying the sculpture's diminutive size. It was sculpted by Alexandre Ouline, who executed a series of bronzes that depicted male figures performing feats of strength and courage, such as pulling a great weight or steering a ship in a stormy sea. Ouline won First Prize in the Seine et Marne agricultural fair in 1954. The sculpture is in excellent condition and is signed.
