Japanese Lacquered Maki-e Fubako in Kodaiji Style

Sold Sold
  • Description
A rare Japanese lacquered wood fubako decorated in a Kodaiji maki-e style circa 17th century (early Edo period). The long and slender rectangular box features a deep lid with slightly rounded corners, fitting on a conforming lower box with two bronze medallion rings with tasseled silk ties. The maki-e decorative on surface was clearly influenced by "Kodaiji style". This distinct lacquer style was originated in the 16th century during Momoyama period from Kodaiji, a Zen Buddhism temple located in Kyoto. The deep reddish background was only sparsely sprinkled with shimmering gold powder. The simple motif is a stylized repletion of autumn chrysanthemum. The design focuses on the geometry of the bloom and the leaves. Nashiji was utilized to infill as part of the main design elements, instead of as just a background. This is called e-nashiji, a unique characteristic of "Kodaiji style". The repetitive design continues to the sides of the box and overlaps with the under covered box, which shows a much more vibrant colors due to the shield from the light. The two bronze medallions appear to be original with a design that matches the shape of the maki-e chrysanthemum flowers. The silk tasseled ties are recent replacement. The trims were finished in gold fundame. The interiors and the base were left in a much dark brown color, unadorned except a very sparse sprinkle of gold powder.
This fubako shows significant age and patina. We suspect that the exterior color may have been a lot darker but faded due to the light exposure. There are signs of historical restorations that shows a more reddish hue, mostly on the end of the lid. They were tastefully done and nicely blended in, but noticeable as shown.
