A Japanese Silver Cloisonne Vase by Ando Jubei Meiji Period

Sold Sold
  • Description
Japan cloisonne enamels are known as shippō-yaki (七宝焼) and the mid-19th century saw the production of very high quality wares in the early centers Nagoya. One of the most renowned workshops was the Ando Cloisonné Company (安藤七宝店), founded by Ando Jubei (1876-1953). The cloisonne work from the workshop was considered the finest during the Meiji Period (1868-1912)
This cloisonne vase with sterling silver mouth and foot ring on offer was made in the Ando workshop circa 1910-20s end of the Meiji period. On the background of a dark red enamel, the contrasting branches of full plume blossom were detailed and they covered almost the entire surface. The techniques used were wired cloisonné with silver, a typical technique from Owari province (Yūsen shippō 有線七宝) on sterling silver enameled body (Gintai shippō 銀胎七宝). There is tremendous beauty in the subtle details of the plume trees and flowers, from the gradient shade on the bark to the yellow highlights in the center of the petals.
The piece is marked "pure silver in Kanji" and branded with the cipher logo of the Ando company.
