Large Pair Japanese Satsuma Ceramic Vases Kozan Meiji Period

A pair of spectacularly decorated Japanese ceramic vases from late Meiji period circa 1900s by Kozan, a maker in Kyoto area who specialized in producing fine satsuma ware. Impressive in large size, both vases feature a full-scale cartouche on front and back side showcasing vignettes of groups of Chinese characters. The composition on the two vases is of nearly mirroring image with subtle but interesting variations. One side depicts a group of deities dressed in Chinese style robes. Many holding iconic regalia that identifies them as the "Eight Immortals". A group of legendary Daoist deities originated in Chinese mythology dating back to the 9th century. The cohort presented the diversity of society covering a wide range of age, gender, social status and together they were worshipped in hope to bring health and prosperity. The other side of the vase depicts a group of aged Aharts. Known as Luohans in Chinese, they are enlightened disciples of the historical Buddha who attained Nirvana through study and meditation. Sandwiched between the two main imageries, elaborate decorative motifs, such as Shishi (Japanese Fu Dog or Buddhist Lion), peonies, brocaded clouds were layered to form visually cohesive borders. The neck and the base were similarly decorated with tortoise and fish scale patterns with additional geometrical and floral pattens.
The overall Kinrande (gold paint) and polychrome enamel paint nearly cover the whole surface and is of one of the highest qualities we have seen. The details and refinement of the brushstroke is breathtaking. A very subtle low relief was noted to fingers in some of the figures. The vases were both marked around the base "The West Field of Kyoto Japan". The mark alludes to many studios located round Kyoto at the time that focused on Satsuma export ware. The artist's name was further pressed on the base as "Kozan" (Light Mountain), one of the high-end satsuma makers in Kyoto.
Remained in fine condition as an original pair, these vases are exceptional examples of the satsuma export ware at its best.
