“Polline” Murano Glass Vase / Tall

  • Description
“Polline” is a collection of delicate and elegant Murano Glass vases, mouth blown and shaped free-hand using “oro soffiato” technique (literally “blown gold”) on the clear glass. Tiny golden particles – at times copious, at times sparse – create unique patterns on the surface of the glass and give a warm golden glow in low light, and are brilliant in sunlight. This gold dust reminds of the pollen of flowers, therefore this collection is named “polline”.

Traditionally, in Murano, the masters often use gold leaf for decorating the clear glass, especially in the realisation of classic Venetian chandeliers or goblets. Indeed, the gold helps to keep the glass the right consistency, particularly suitable for complex manual work such as the realisation of small decorative details. The earliest recorded examples of Venetian gold leaf glass date back to the second half of the 15th century.

The gold leaves are generally 8 by 8 cm in size and the quantity of the leaves used depends on the desired final size of the object to be realised. The master glassblower organises the leaves on an iron plate, then the molten glass gets rolled on them and dipped again in the melt. When the master glassblower blows in the pipe, the gold leaves tear apart into small fragments or gold dust, giving a decorative effect.

The gold leaves used are 24k (99.9 % pure gold). Each piece is dated and signed. Sizes and shapes vary slightly and subtle markings and/or small air bubbles may be seen in the glass.

Laura Sattin (Vicenza, 1989) is an Italian architect currently living and working in Basel, Switzerland. Since 2015, in parallel to her career as an architect, Laura has also dedicated herself to the creation of blown glass objects. A strong passion for the material and a genuine appreciation for the skills of glassblowers guides her research, which focuses on the study, understanding and challenge of ancient glassblowing techniques. Her glassworks, characterised by the careful combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics, are objects with simple forms that aim to emphasise the peculiarities and potentials of the material and the handicraft process. Laura’s glassworks have been selected and exhibited in several group and solo shows worldwide, such as: DesignArt Tokyo, DesignMiami/Basel, Collectible Brussels and many more.
