Lebkuecher Sterling Silver Tall Vase in Art Nouveau/ Arts & Crafts Style
-
Description
Lebkuecher sterling silver vase from the late 19th or early 20th century, in Art Nouveau or Arts & Crafts Style, with delicate, natural motifs, adorning the top and bottom of the vase. This geometrically inclined vase prefigures the Art Deco movement's attention to geometry and lines. It measures 15 1/3'' in height by 4 1/3'' in diameter at the top, weighs 41.6 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. It was retailed by Cowell & Hubbard, a Cleveland retailer of jewelry, clocks, and silver, which has been active since 1861.
Lebkuecher was a Newark-based silversmith, active in the 1890s and early 1900s, who is renowned for his Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau objects. Lebkuecher was mentioned in Architectural Digest, as “a company known for crafting medals for the Rough Riders, including Theodore Roosevelt.” The partners were Arthur Lebkuecher, Francis Lebkuecher and Charles Wientge, former superintendent & designer at the highly respected Howard Sterling Company. Lebkuecher & Co. changed to F.A. Lester and, in 1918, was taken over by the Elder Company. -
