Legras Vase France Art decò in glass hot glazes signed, 1920s

Sold Sold
  • Description
Medium-sized vase made by Legras , French production at the beginning of the 20th century. It is engraved in relief with colored glass and decorated with stylized flowers.
The Legras signature is engraved in cameo. The vase is in excellent vintage condition, no chipping or missing. Its decoration is obtained by the application of hot engraved enamels. A subsequent acid bath determines the veins and ribs of the foliage, a third the almost granular finish of the walls, as the area engraving creates small reliefs, which give the glass an appearance similar to carved hard stone. Its cameo is also made of hot acid enamel. The vase being a very original element of the early years of Art Deco are perfect for furnishing luxury houses where you can breathe real Art.
The manufacture Legras, while practicing all techniques, makes hydrofluoric acid engraving its specialty, in some processes associating it with enamelling and gilding; the colors are pleasant and refined especially when they take on the tones of autumn. Perhaps the most excellent processing of Legras is the one carried out with the mélange technique (registered with a patent), commonly called "Nile green". They are blown and acid-etched vases with a floral subject (often small white dog roses) on a pastel background between blue and aqua green, with effects of matités. In some cases, they are finished at the wheel, and with small touches of enamel and great fire enriched with volutes and ramages in pure gold on the upper edge, obtaining a surprising result.
Equally interesting and original are the glass vases imitating semi-precious stones, in particular the carved cornelian. They are made of several layers of opaque beige-pink glass, with floral motifs - ireos, orchids, chrysanthemums, gladioli -, or fruit - berries, holly, strawberries, cherries, mistletoe -, or seaweed: exquisitely acid-etched subjects, sometimes finished at the wheel and fashionable bottoms. A subsequent acid bath determines the veins and ribs of the foliage, a third the almost granular finish of the walls, as the zone engraving creates small reliefs, which give the glass an appearance similar to carved hard stone; finally, the flowers, fruits or algae are treated with yellow, red or brown enamel, and the foliage in green. At the same time as these valuable executions, a commercial range of vases with simple shapes is produced, in transparent enamel-painted glass, with scenes of landscapes or flowers (with the abbreviated Leg signature).
