A large Meissen porcelain group of gardeners, late 19th century

$ 7,000
  • Description
    A large Meissen porcelain group of gardeners, late 19th century
    German, c.1870
    Height 30cm, width 21cm, depth 19cm

    Taken from a model of 1772 by M.C. Avier and J.C. Schönheit, this charming porcelain group by the Meissen manufactory depicts a group of five figures around a central rock mound, involved in various idyllic activities relating to gardening and rural life. The male figure at the centre offers a flower to a lady standing on his right, as the other three characters go about their daily tasks. The piece is delicately and carefully painted, the gentle manner of the piece mirroring the quaint and trouble-free lifestyle of the characters it depicts. The crossed swords mark for Meissen appear in underglaze-blue, with incised model number D97.
