Description
Michael Elkan Box in Live Edge Maple Burl American Craft Movement 1980s
This is a truly wonderful trinket or jewelry box in maple burl made by renowned American Craft Movement wood worker Michael Elkan in the 1980s.
A great design and wonderfully made - making these kinds of high quality boxes involves a lot of skill. Mesmerizing maple wood grain and live edge burl.
Michael Elkan (1942-2014) initially was a fashion designer, but he decided to pursue a career in wood working in the mid seventies - establishing his own studio around 1980. That same year his pieces were seen and collected by master woodworker George Nakashima who also had a selection of these Elkan boxes for sale in his studio from that moment on.
Elkan’s pieces were shown in several major gallery exhibitions and featured at the Smithsonian Craft Show, the American Craft Museum and elsewhere. Today, Elkan’s works are held in many private collections and are highly sought after.
