Description
This "Chouetton" (Young Wood Owl) vase, created by Pablo Picasso in 1952, exemplifies the renowned artist’s whimsical engagement with ceramics and his ability to imbue everyday objects with a profound sense of artistry. Crafted from white earthenware clay at the iconic Madoura pottery workshop in France, the vase features hand-painted decoration in rich brown and black oxides, highlighting Picasso’s mastery of dynamic line and organic form.
The design showcases two distinct owl faces, one on either side, embodying Picasso’s imaginative and playful approach to his subject matter. These expressive faces capture a balance between abstraction and character, creating a powerful yet approachable work of functional art. Limited to an edition of 500, the vase reveals Picasso’s partnership with Madoura, which allowed him to explore ceramics as a medium for sculptural and graphic experimentation.
On full display is the rapidity of brush stroke and creation, as well as prolific iteration with stunning material variation and expression to which Picasso is considered among, if not the greatest artist to have ever lived. This is a powerful example of his ceramics and feels as fresh and gleaming as when first created.
This exceptional piece is a celebration of Picasso’s artistic legacy and remains a coveted collectible for fine art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and collectors worldwide. Signed on the undersurface. In Excellent Vintage Condition.
