Description
A handsome pair of Venetian figurines, each depicted in traditional dress and holding a tray - a classic expression of the decorative arts that once graced the most elegant homes of Italy. The figures are captured with a sense of athletic grace and intellectual attraction to diversity, reflecting the high skill of Venetian craftsmen who specialized in these exotic and storied forms.
Circa 1920, these period pieces were created during a twentieth century revival of the flamboyant Moorish style that first captured the European imagination centuries prior.
The figures are finished in polychrome and gilt, their surfaces wearing a soft patina that speaks to a century of careful display. Rooted in the Baroque tradition and its later 19th century revivals, this pair embodies the Venetian love of opulent surface and objects designed to lend a sense of history and worldliness to a space. -
