“Bamboo Shower” Triangular Flower Basket (T-3491)

Description
Using bamboo and rattan, Tsujimura formed the base with double square plaiting and the sides with twill plaiting over parallel-line construction. An inserted plaque has his incised signature reading Ichiro.

The basket comes with a vertically scored and lacquered bamboo otoshi water container and its original triangular kiri-wood tomobako storage box. The box lid is inscribed on the outside "Bamboo Shower; Bundled and Plaited Bamboo Triangular Flower Basket" and signed on the inside "Ichiro, Ashidajima, Ashigarigo" with seal.

A graduate of the Oita Prefecture Beppu Arts and Crafts Institute, Tsujimura now lives and works in his native Ashigarigo in Kanagawa Prefecture. In parallel with his studio practice, he is an active member of the Mingei crafts movement, working on the restoration of old rural baskets and studying the use of materials other than bamboo. Tsujimura often makes baskets in unusual shapes and likes to combine ami (plaiting) with kumi (non-plaiting) techniques, as here. He has won awards both nationally and internationally; his collaboration with the jeweler Shimada Yukiko was awarded second prize at the 2005 Diamond Concours in Antwerp, Belgium.
