Description
A handwoven bamboo basket used as an ikebana by Japanese Bamboo artist Yufu Shohaku (b. 1941-). The basket was constructed using different sizes of pine needle plaiting intercepted with irregular plaiting. The feet were finished in a subtle looped concentric style that appears to be a signature to the artist. The basket features a delicate loop handle and a very fine knotted design. These design elements are prelude to the more drastic ad bold style found in the recent work of the artist. The basket was coated in a light reddish lacquer.
Yufu Shohaku is a second-generation bamboo artist from Beppu, the son of Yufu Chikuryu, putting him in the lineage of Sato Chikuyusai. His works is held in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum and Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Museum. The piece appears from the early part of the artist's career. It was purchased in Japan post war in the second half of the 20th century. The appearance is more restrained and traditional and predated the bold style in recent years by the artist that emphasizes on free forms with incorporation of bamboo chunks and roots. The basket is signed underneath and the collecting by World War II General Kerns and thence by descent. -
