This magnificent 17th century Flemish tapestry depicting four figures within a landscape, the figures carrying a drum, flowers, a pheasant and a pouch woven with the inscription 'VIVE CONEI', the borders with scrolling foliage and acanthus at the angles

In the 17th century Flemish tapestries were arguably the most important productions, with many specimens of this era still extant, demonstrating the intricate detail of pattern and color embodied in painterly compositions, often of monumental scale

‘Flemish tapestry’ at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries meant primarily Brussels tapestry; the city had become the principal center for tapestry weaving, with a character and technique quite unlike that in other workshops

Novel characteristics too were the search for perfection, recognizable in the earliest works attributed, probably rightly, to Brussels, and a bias towards painting. Today the design of a tapestry is often traced to a famous painting as in the many representations of the Baptism of Christ
