Description
Regency period Sampler, 1827, by Maria Thurgood. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering floral border. Colours silver, light brown, dark brown, gold, black and blue. Verse reads, 'This is my Work my Friends may see, Though many Miles I distant be, If I should Wander far from Home, This I leave till I Return'. Signed and dated 'Maria Thurgood her Work Finnished November 1827'. Packed with a wonderful set of motifs, including a field full of sheep, with plants and flowers, rabbits, dogs, fir trees, trees, birds, squirrels, stags with a bird in a pergola and an owl on top. Also butterflies, flowers, bees and potted flowering plants. Framed in an old, possibly original, gilt covered wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Origin: England Period: 19th Century Condition: Good. Very Good. A couple of tiny holes. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear and touched in chips. Some repainted gilding along the bottom of the frame. Overall of good appearance though.
