Rare English Regency Silver Gilt Portable Catholic Wine Cup 1832
-
Description
George IV gilt sterling silver portable wine cup. Made by Charles Rawlings and William Summers in London in 1832. Base is bell-form bowl with threaded plug. Top is twist-mounted cup with curved bottom and flared rim. Both have engraved Jesuit emblem. In original leather-bound case with velvet lining.
A rare ecclesiastical vessel dating from three years after the Catholic Emancipation Act, which was passed by Parliament in 1829. The act allowed Catholics to hold public office. The era of priest-holes and safe houses had largely passed by the 18th century, but Catholics nonetheless suffered restrictions. They could not, for example, sit in Parliament. That changed after 1829 and there was a proliferation of Catholic institutions, including several Jesuit colleges. The Catholic Revival (“Going over to Rome” was the colloquial expression for conversion) had an influence on late Regency and early Victorian literature and art.
Fully marked. Very good condition with nice toning.
