Abstract Decorated Bowl in Hammered Brass by Cris Agterberg, Netherlands 1934

Description
In addition to the beautiful table lamp that we present during the PAN, we also have an object from the hand of sculptor and decorative artist Cris Agterberg. This abstractly decorated bowl is made entirely of brass and has the unusual qualities that are necessary for a conversation piece.DesignThis specific bowl is dated “1934” and the it’s also signed with “Cris Agterberg” on the base. A few centimeters away from this signature it also states ""original copy"". We find another signature, albeit minuscule, on the edge of the bowl just below the outer band. This is only noticeable if you look at it at an angle and with the right amount of light.Agterberg used the so-called hammerblow technique for this brass bowl, which was a popular decoration technique in the Netherlands at the time (Brouwer p.64). It is quickly noticeable that a hammered pattern can be seen diffusely over the entire shell. This creates a subtle series of shadows that appear to brush the surface of the bowl.The modernist pattern, created with great craftsmanship, is a true feast for the eyes and will captivate the viewer for a longer time. The lines are all one millimeter and together form the planes and arcs that so determinedly but gracefully form the abstract decoration. Sleek trapezoid-like legs stand out sharply from the surface and raise the bowl to a height of approximately three centimeters, creating a beautiful cast shadow. Forming a pleasant contrast with the shiny brass.ConditionThe condition of this object is very good with only minimal signs of use. Small pits and color differences that may or may not have occurred during the creation are part of this.
