English Edwardian Exotic Raj Elephant Imperial Centerpiece 1902
-
Description
Edwardian sterling silver exotic centerpiece. Made by Dobson & Sons in London in 1902. Entwined palm trees shade an elephant, whose trunk reaches out to the food offered by one of two turbaned men. The howdah awaits a pith-helmeted sahib to command where to go. A poignant Raj-era relic made a year after Viceroy Curzon declared, “As long as we rule India we are the greatest power in the world. If we lose it, we shall drop straightaway to a third-rate power.” Fully marked. Very good condition with toning to gilt wash.
