Pair of George III candlesticks, ca 1820. Each: Bellied socket with detachable bobeche; upward tapering fluted and leaf-wrapped columnal shaft with flanges. Leaf and gadrooned ornament. Made of Sheffield plate, the technique that involved cladding a base metal in silver that was developed by Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) in Birmingham. Georgian industrial design applied to age-old lighting device. Maker’s stamp. Very good condition.
