Description
Matched set of four Dutch hand-painted pottery soup or pasta bowls boldly decorated with stylized star flowers in red, green foliage and tiny blue flowers, the wide rims decorated in a diamond diaper pattern, trimmed in blue. One of the backs is signed: “Petrus Regout & Co Maastrict, Made in Holland. The other three are signed Societe Ceramique, Maastrict Made in Holland.
The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834. It was located in Maastricht, Holland. They originally made glass. Two years later production of pottery began. In 1879 the image of the sphinx started to be used as a company mark and logo. Since 1899 the company was called De Sphinx. In 1958 the company merged with Société Ceramique and changed its name to N.V. Sphinx-Céramique. It is now out of business. -
