Whiting Sterling Silver Horse Flask with American Polo Association
-
Description
Large Victorian sterling silver flask. Made by Whiting Manufacturing Company in New York, ca 1899. Tall bombe bowl with “stitched” and “braided” shoulders. Detachable cup and hinged and cork-lined cover. On front, etched fox hunt with an unseated rider beside horse and hounds. Help arrives in the person of top-hatted huntsman.
On back, acid-etched presentation in loose whiplash letters: “William A. Hazard / From / Laura P. Hazard / Christmas / 1899”.
William Ayrault Hazard was a founder of the American Polo Association and thinly-stretched clubman who, in his spare time, managed a railway and salt mine. His wife Laura (née Pelton) was a donor to the New York Public Library. It was a rarified milieu where the couple’s daughter made headlines as the “Latest Recruit from Society to Enter Trade” when she ventured to open a shop.
Fully marked including maker’s stamp and no. 2743. Very good condition.
