Description
An Art Nouveau silver Wine Carafe with tray and six chalice cups by the famed German WMF company . This unique set has it all ! There are the undulating curves of the Art Nouveau design, but also the more geometric “Jugendstil” embellishments that were the gateway to the Art Deco Movement. The tray isnt simply a flat sheet of silver, rather it has special indentations so that the carafe and the cups can nestle in place.
Artists who worked in the school of “Jugendstil” (literally the “young style”) were dedicated to finding ways of balancing ornamentalism and functionalism and ways of reconciling art with industry . So whether you use this for serving guests (function) or simply consider this sculptural decor (ornament) , it is a remarkable piece worth owning.
The firm of WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik ) produced hundreds and hundreds of household objects in high quality silver plate that celebrated the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements and promoted the fashion by selling their pieces all throughout Eastern and Western Europe as well as South America in the early part of the 20th Century.
