Large Framed Stunning Antique Chinese Embroidered Robe Qing Dynasty
-
Description
A woman's coat made of black stain silk with wide sleeves from China late Qing Dynasty (late 19th to early 20th century), mounted with the sleeves folded and presented on a coral red shadow box frame as a stunning piece of textile art. On the black background, elaborate embroideries of mirror image of peonies and butterflies were created using polychrome silk threads. Small branches of plum blossom were also included. The stylized design was a popular motif in Chinese textile for woman's attires as the peony flowers symbolizes fortunate and beauty while butterflies indicate love and happiness (as in the legend of butterfly lovers). Satin stiches were used mostly, supplemented with chain-crouch stiches. Matching white silk bands were placed on end of sleeves, under the collars and along the front and side seams, making a cohesive design. Further elaborate needlework including forbidden knot was used to decorate these bands with motifs including hibiscus, tray of peaches and scrolling vines. The front seam indicates the robe belonged to a Chinese ethic woman instead of Manchurian as their attires tend to have seam on one side. As a luxury item with fine workmanship, the robe was for most likely for a lady with noble status and or wealth.
Closer examination of the area of the robe, such as the inner lining of the collar, reveals wear and patina that indicates this robe was an authentic and worn piece, not a reproduction.
Professionally and artistically displayed in a shadow frame with the red color matching the highlight of the peony, this piece of textile art will be a conversation point in any interior space. -
