Genova 1890 – Fumeri (GE) 1979
Born in the Castelletto district of Genoa to a noble family, he began to take an interest in painting and drawing outside the scholastic institutions of the time, following the advice of his father, Marquis Marino Merello and his great-uncle Luigi, a master in engraving. The news about the painter is conflicting: from some sources, we can say that he had an academic training, from others a self-taught training. Of course, initially he devoted himself to drawings of religious subjects, to then be attracted by painting from life, and by the greatness of nature: coastal views, panoramas of the Valpolcevera, views of the port of Genoa, landscapes of the hinterland, still lifes (including mushrooms, for which he is well known and called "the painter of mushrooms"). He organized several personal exhibitions throughout Italy and some events abroad. From 1938 he established his residence in the family holiday home in Fumeri (Mignanego), in the province of Genoa, in direct contact with nature.
Amedeo Merello's style is post-impressionist, with a tendency towards realist hyper-realism through an extraordinary use of colour. The technique is characterized by a rapidity of the brush with short strokes.
A curiosity: Amedeo Merello is a cousin of the great painter Rubaldo Merello (1872-1922). - More Information
