Description
One-of-a-kind collage with drawings and old european maps.
Hyunjoo Choi explores in his work the subtle dialogue between matter and perception. Through a rigorous and poetic approach, she creates compositions that question the imprint of time, traces, memory. Her artistic approach is part of an aesthetic of minimalism, specific to Korean culture, where the apparent lightness hides a deep emotional density.
“My recent drawing work is part of a reflection on loss and memory, born of the oppressive weight of a world where what once seemed obvious to me is no longer so. During the Covid period, I felt this deprivation acutely and let myself be guided by road maps found by chance, projecting my desire for escape and freedom. Each cube placed became a fragment of memories thrown like dice, sketching an intimate cartography of my past.
The advent of digital navigation has relegated the road map to obsolescence, making it an object doomed to disappear, like so many other erased elements of my memory ecosystem. However, my memories do not fade. Invisible, they remain. The names of the cities inscribed on this map — Strasbourg, Nice, Paris — are not mere geographical indications, but receptacles of the time I lived there. Each of these places resonates like an echo of my past, anchored in my memory and perpetuated there. My artistic approach is thus articulated around this ecosystem of memory, where space and temporality intertwine to recompose a sensitive cartography. Through this work, I explore the possibility of appeasement, even reconciliation, seeking to heal the imprint of time in me and around me. Hyunjoo CHOI”
HyunJoo Choi is a contemporary Korean visual artist, active in South Korea and France. Her series of ink drawings on paper, “In Search of the Lost City” (2021-2023), incorporates road maps, exploring memories and vanished urban landscapes. “My artistic approach thus revolves around this ecosystem of memory, where space and temporality intertwine to reconstruct a sensitive cartography. Through this work, I explore the possibility of appeasement, even reconciliation, seeking to heal the imprint of time within and around me.” -
