Isaac Muse(1906-1996) took up art after he left military service as a young man. He taught art in Newark, New Jersey, and his most famous pupil was the painter, Grace Hartigan. He exhibited with the Bertha Schaefer Gallery, New York, throughout the 1950's.

He was married to the artist and sculptor, Siv Holme, who was Swedish by birth.

Muse and Holme immigrated to France after WWII and lived most of the time in the village of Tillard in the Oise region of France. They had two children, also artists, Marya and Bjarne. Holme did many commissioned pieces for the Monnaie de Paris.

Most of Muse's later works are in gouache on paper. His work became more abstract and modernist in his later years.

A fire in his studio in the 1970's destroyed much of his work from the 1950's, 60's and 70's. He continued to paint until his death in the 1990's although he never received much notoriety in Europe. The majority of his patrons were in the US.
