Description
Constant Leemans seems to have looked to the French Impressionists for his landscape with path and haystack. He applied small loose brushstrokes and paid particular attention to the lighting effect and atmosphere. Yet, the form of the natural elements is still tangible and no complete disintegration of the form takes place. Was the artist consciously following in the footsteps of Claude Monet who painted a series of 25 haystacks in 1890? The fascinating lighting effect of Leemans is also reminiscent of the work of the Belgian luminist painter Emile Claus (1849-1924).
