Description
Corazón del Paraiso, or “heart of paradise,” earns its name from the cénote caverns near Tulum, Mexico, the breathtaking
natural sinkholes which serve as Leone’s source material. Cenotes are formed when limestone bedrock collapses, and
exposes groundwater, resulting in pools of crystal blue fresh water, perfect for the vacationing adventure-seeker.
Swimmers are photographed from below, and Leone then translates the image using oil paint onto canvas. The result –a
hyper-realistic yet whimsical rendering of the scene, in diligent observance of light refraction and coruscation.
In Corazón del Paraiso #14, eight swimmers rest atop some of the fallen bedrock, their faces obscured above the water’s
surface, which fractalizes into a beautiful web of concentric circles. The bodies’ weightlessness in the water evokes a
playfulness, contributing a sort of charm to the works’ overall effect. Leone is drawn to water as a subject, not only for its
symbolic potential –birth, life, and re-birth, for example, but also for its ability to free our bodies from the bounds of
gravity. The eight swimmers in this work also show a kind of youthful litheness, though Leone leaves their age and identity
up to the viewer’s interpretation. -
