Description
DAVID DE LA MAR (DUTCH, 1832-1898) PAINTING OF MAIDEN FEEDING GOAT.
In oil on canvas, signed lower right "Dav. de la Mar".
The work of David de la Mar was heavily influenced by the Dutch Barbizon school, evident in the early impressionism that permeats his paintings. The present example is a gorgeous depiction of a young woman, probably a farmer’s daughter, in the rural countryside resting on an old farmyard fence with some knitting in hand; however, she has been distracted by a hungry goat who clearly covets the long and lush grass on the other side of the fence. With her hand now full of the freshly picked grass, she slowly feeds the patiently waiting mouth. It is a bright and optimistic work, a departure from some of his darker and more brooding images. The painting was relined at some point in the last decade or so, probably cleaned at the same time judging by the excellent condition of the surface. It remains in presentation ready condition. It is an exquisite example for the collector of fine Barbizon paintings.

Condition Report:
Light craquelure throughout. Could eventually benefit from a cleaning (light yellowing to varnish, minor surface soiling). Under UV: minor touch ups around edges. Relined canvas. Old frame, not original with expected dings and abrasions. -
