Description
BALTIC NEOCLASSICAL MAHOGANY, LEATHER AND BRASS BUREAU PLAT WITH CARTONNIER
Eastern European, probably the Baltic States
Circa late 19th century, the tambour cabinet with alterations
44 3/4" H (top of cabinet)
30 5/8" H (top of desk) x 57 1/2" W x 29 5/8" D
An attractive late 19th century Baltic bureau plat in mahogany and mahogany veneers, the rectangular top fitted with a blue leather writing surface framed by a flamed mahogany border edged by brass trim. Left of the writing tableau is a small tambour cabinet fitted with four stacked drawers, each hand-dovetailed in mahogany secondary woods, and three open compartments for letters and documents. The tambour slides smoothly to conceal the fitted interior, its slats finely joined and matched in grain. The frieze is fitted with three drawers, also hand-dovetailed and executed in pine, the fronts hung with circular brass pulls and applied brass cockbead molding around the edges. The desk stands on austere tapered square legs terminating in brass sabots and casters
Condition: A good presentation throughout with minor surface wear/scuffing, rubbing to the writing surface and relieving of edges consistent with age. Replaced pulls. Some roughness around leather edges. The tambour cabinet shows evidence of being rebuilt/restored/altered during the 20th century. Lacking keys for the tambour cabinet and desk. Ready to place.
