Description
Chinese reverse glass painting circa 1790 with particularly fine detail. Chinese reverse glass painting was popular from its first introduction in the 17th century. Country houses, if there was a penchant for Chinoiserie, would almost always have one example. The rococo frame on this example is signed, W. Thomas, a wood carver who opened premises in Little Venice in London after the war and who proceeded to become the "go-to" shop for dealers wishing to re-gild or repair frames.
