    About
Starting in the 1920s and continuing throughout his career, Braque began combining dirt and sand into his paint, ascribing the objects and compositions he depicted with more body. As seen in Nature Morte: Prunes (1925), this unique finish came to create a unique balance between the delicate nature of the fruit and the muted tone of the brown background. The plums, painted in such a deep purple, and the light cloth, with arm-like features that caress the fruit, are juxtaposed to the textured surface, demonstrating Braque’s timely predilection for depth over playful compositions. Though small in size, the introduction of these natural elements into the tableaux allow the subject to transcend the boundaries of its very existence, giving the painting the breadth of a much bigger work.

According to John Golding, an expert on the artist, “after 1917 Braque’s production tends to fall into two very general categories: large works, often executed in series, and smaller, more intimate, and more disparate works. These ‘cabinet’ pictures share some of the iconography and concerns of the larger pictures, and sometimes they help to resolve the new pictorial challenges that Braque constantly set for himself”.

Message from Seller:

Bernard Jacobson Gallery was founded in 1969, publishing and distributing prints and by the mid 1970s, having established himself as one of the major dealers in the international print boom, Jacobson began to show paintings and sculpture. The early 1980s saw the gallery open branches in Los Angeles and New York, expanding the range of international artists. From 1997, the gallery moved more firmly into American and international art.
