Eclipse - Painting with Female Figures and Sun Eclipse
-
Description
Eclipse is a 56 x 72-inch surrealist figurative oil painting. It is signed in the front lower right corner. The primary colors are brown and blue. Silhouettes of nude female figures sit against a surreal sea landscape. A glowing sun, darkened by the moon, emanates a softened light, as it happens during an eclipse. A vibrant indigo-blue sea creates an interesting counterbalance to the otherwise brown and orange color palette. This piece is part of a long series of works where G. B. Vanni explores mythological themes worldwide. The artist took his inspiration from the goddess of the moon, Selene, and the god of the sun, Helios, present in Greek mythology.
Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He was actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He taught color theory at the prestigious Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for 30 years. His works have been shown in galleries in the United States, Europe, and Japan. -
