Sophisticated Lady on a Walk is a 40 x 30-inch figurative surrealist oil painting on canvas. Red, white, and green are the primary colors. The painting is very playful. Vanni shaped a human female figure by juxtaposing red, green, orange, and blue triangles against a white background. The elegant lady holds a red balloon, keeping it in balance over the geometrical shapes. The red frame gives the image more poignancy. The reference to artworks by Paul Klee is evident, yet Vanni maintains a very personal approach.

Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He was actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He taught color theory at the Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for over 30 years. His works have been shown in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
