“Figures Working the Field” Landscape Painting by Johannes Lippmann

Description
While relatively little is known of his life, Johannes Lippmann was a prolific painter and broadly collected by the German middle class of the early 20th century. During 1935 his memorial exhibition, more than 125 privately owned paintings and sketches were shown in honor of his life and work. The body of his oeuvre is distinct for its traditional roots and a nostalgic eye that seems always to be looking at the past. His preference for painting working people is well represented in this example, a colorful landscape characterized by a heavy impasto in the vigorous brush-strokes that pays homage to the Impressionists, a movement only hinted at in his work. The carefully lettered signature lower right reads "Johannes Lippmann" and is dated '17 (1917). It remains on its original lining and stretchers, housed in an early and perhaps original simple black molded frame.

Condition Report:
Original lining. Period frame with one small and one large chip to lower edge. Brittleness to upper left corner in the sky. A few chips in the tree leaves. Surface craquelure throughout. Scuff to right of two figures, scuff in trunk of the foremost tree. Would benefit from a cleaning and general conservation at some point. -
