60% Off Original Price: $ 15,000
Sale Price: $ 6,000
  • Description
Jorge Fick (American, 1932-2004), Small Rain, mixed media on paper, pencil signed "J. Fick" lower right, 27" x 19.5" (sight).

Jorge Fick rose to the top of the 2nd Generation Abstract Expressionist after studying at Black Mountain College as a protege of Franz Kline. Moving to NYC in 1955, Fick shared a studio with Kline, and quickly established himself in New York with a show at the Stable Gallery. Flourishing with numerous one man shows and institutional support, Fick grew tired of the New York art scene, and moved to New Mexico in 1962, where he shared a studio with the sculptor John Chamberlain.

In New Mexico, Fick became a central figure in the Taos Modern movement, founded by Georgia O'keefe, and carried on by artists including Agnes Martin, Emil Bisttram, Edward Corbett, Marsden Hartley, and Robert Ray. Fick developed a signature style known as 'Pod Painting', mixing his earlier Expressionist technique with a Pop sensibility. The current work, "Small Rain" is an interesting departure from Fick's signature style; showing the influence of Agnes Martin's grid formalism with a distinct reference to the ubiquitous Navajo weaving he encountered, evoked in the color palate and repeating triangles.

Fick's works are held in many Public institutions including: Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Harwood Museum, Taos, New Mexico; New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; Roswell Museum, Roswell, New Mexico; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts; Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, Asheville, North Carolina.
