Mythological painting signed J. Hickel and dated 1770, Medea

$ 10,000
  • Description
    Great 18th-century mythological painting. Signed lower left by the great Austrian artist Joseph Hickel (1736-1807) and dated 1770. Court painter of the Habsburgs and a favorite of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, he worked primarily in Vienna and specialized in portraits with a strong psychological component.

    This oil on canvas painting depicts Medea, one of the most tragic and dark figures in Greek mythology, a cruel and passionate heroine associated with the myth of the Argonauts. A sorceress and priestess with extraordinary powers, she falls madly in love with Jason and helps him conquer the Golden Fleece, betraying her homeland. During their escape, she kills her brother to slow down her pursuers and later, in a vengeful rage to punish Jason, even kills their children. Medea is depicted in the moment before the crime, her gaze fixed on destiny and her sword clutched in her hand, at the moment of greatest psychological drama.

    This painting of remarkable pictorial quality is distinguished by its sumptuous drapery and the rendering of the jewels, revealing the hand of a court portraitist. The marvelous golden earrings have metallic highlights, and the double headband in her hair is dotted with masterfully painted pearls. This artwork has a strong visual impact, ideal for spaces that convey refinement and elegance. Perfect for a study or stateroom, it is equally suited to both classic and modern settings.

    Splendid 19th-century frame in carved and gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 92.5 x W 66.5 cm.
