Description
Voluptuous in its approach to scene and palette, this sumptuous portrait of two women, lounging side by side amongst pillows and fabrics in satin and silk, was painted by Rudolph Schabelitz. It is not known who these women were, but they are clearly dear friends, and relish their gorgeous setting, sporting dresses and fashionable hairdos befitting ladies of high rank. The artist was a New Yorker through-and-through, having been born in Staten Island, studied at the Art Students League, and active in the Salmagundi Club near Union Square. He illustrated many books and magazines in the 1910s, 20s and 30s, including advertisements for Garford automobiles and a series of mystery novels such as "Murder Draws a Line," some of which he co-wrote. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed in the lower righthand corner.
