Fabulous theater cover project by Serge Tchekhonine, 1930, Paris, France

$ 25,000
  • Description
    Serge Tchekhonine was a Russian artist who studied applied drawing, ceramics, and pottery in St. Petersburg. He settled in France in 1928, gaining attention for his finely crafted ceramics, having previously directed the State Manufacture of Petrograd, as well as for his portraits and miniatures. 'His work is extremely varied. It recalls those Renaissance artists who approached the most diverse domains of art with the same mastery and perfection,' reported the daily newspaper L’Homme Libre on June 11, 1929, during his solo exhibition.

    In France, Tchekhonine collaborated with jewelers, painters, and theaters, creating costume designs and posters.

    This artwork is a cover project for the Ballets Russes of Vera Nemtchinova at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1930. The artist is part of the Russian community in Paris in the 1930s, reminiscent of Léon Bakst. The influence of Russian avant-gardes is evident in the treatment of simplified, geometric bodies and the incredible sense of movement and dynamism. Furthermore, his work is highly decorative, colorful, and reminiscent of collage art.

    It is a drawing in brown ink, with highlights in watercolor and gouache on paper. The artwork is signed at the bottom left and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

    Dimensions (sight size): 38.5 x 28 cm
    (with frame): 57 x 46 cm.
