Description A superb example of a floral still life by the artist Severin Roesen dating to 1865-70, his prolific period in Williamsport, PA. The painting is unsigned, but has been authenticated by Roesen authority Judith O'Toole (copy of letter included) and includes Roesen's signature bird's nest with eggs. Roesen emerged from the 17th century tradition of Dutch Master still lifes but imbued his paintings with the luscious abundance of American flora, providing a contrast to the austere still lifes of the Peale family. His paintings celebrate the abundance and possibilities of life in America in the 19th century and are almost devotional renderings of American material bounty. They also reflect the contemporary interest in botany and nature.
