La Spiaggia #1 (The Beach), a 1963 photograph by Enzo Ragazzini, presents a mesmerizing snapshot of human activity on a crowded beach. This photograph was commissioned for the XIII Milan Triennial, where it featured as part of a massive mural in the Italian pavilion designed by Gae Aulenti, later renowned for her transformation of the Gare d’Orsay into the Musée d’Orsay. The pavilion won the International Grand Prix, a testament to the innovative integration of Ragazzini’s art. Comparable to the works of William Klein, this photograph captures human dynamism but pushes further with avant-garde darkroom techniques, creating a tableau that is as nostalgic as it is otherworldly.
