    Watercolor on paper by the French artist, Jacques Guiaud. Signed lower right and dated 1833. Condition: Good. Presently unframed.

    Biography:
    Originally from a family in Marseille, his father, Joseph-François Guiaud (1777-1846), was comedian Sociétaire de la Comedie-Francaise and his mother, Marie-Louise-Victoire de Brecq, artist. The chance of their business trips made him born in Chambéry.

    A student of Louis Watelet and Léon Cogniet, Jacques Guiaud is also influenced by landscape painters like Jules Dupré. In 1834, he obtained his first major commission: seven paintings of historical scenes to decorate the Empire rooms of the Palace of Versailles. In 1836, King Louis-Philippe his painting Le Pas Bayard in Dinant. He exhibited at almost all the Salons of painting and sculpture of Paris between 1831 and 1876, receiving several awards, including the mention "out of competition" for his painting Palma de Mallorca in 1876.

    He made many trips, from 1836 in Italy, then, after his installation in Nice from 1847 where he gives drawing lessons, in Tyrol, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, along the French coast of the Channel and the Atlantic, Denmark. He works a lot for the wealthy foreigners who come to winter on the French Riviera, like the Grand Duchess Sophie of Baden and others.

    In 1860, Jacques Guiaud and his family settled in Paris, city Pigalle. In 1865, he was chosen, along with other painters, to decorate the castle of Fontainebleau, and realized five paintings of forest landscapes. He continues to travel, returning periodically to Nice, also discovering Spain, especially Mallorca, where he goes on several occasions, as well as in Brittany. He also designed engravings for magazines such as Le Tour du monde, the Journal des artistes, L'Illustration, and lithographs to illustrate works, including the picturesque and romantic Travels in the former France of Baron Isidore Taylor.

    His works are preserved in French museums, notably at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, which has nine oils on canvas depicting scenes from the siege of Paris in 1870.
